Location
Shanklin Esplanade, on site of former pier entrance, Shanklin, Isle of Wight Description Shanklin was the end point for the PLUTO (Pipeline Under the Ocean) network, before the pipes were run under the Channel to supply fuel to the Allied armies in Northern France. The Memorial was originally located at the base of the cliff lift in Shanklin, and installed in 1958. It was removed in the aftermath of the storms of October 1987, and has subsequently been restored. The rededication service was held by the Rev Alan Swanborough and the unveiling was performed by Countess Mountbatten of Burma, on Monday, 19th September 2005. |

The Plaque was originally installed at Shanklin Cliff Lift. After the destruction of the Pier in October 1987 the plaque was
taken away and found its way to Jordan's scrap yard in Newport, and thence to Bembridge Heritage Museum. |
